Before Thermage After Thermage

Thermage® is a quick, easy, and non-invasive alternative to a face lift.  Using patented radiofrequency technology, Thermage lifts and tightens loose and sagging skin to restore youthful contouring to patients’ faces.  The Thermage device stimulates collagen production and temporarily reduces wrinkles while keeping the skin surface cool and comfortable.  There is no incision or recovery time.  The new and improved Thermage tips being used today are very comfortable, with an improved technique that utilizes lower energy settings with multiple passes to enhance results and minimize discomfort.  One can drive home afterwards.  Research and time has revealed the Thermage results may last 2 years or longer, and can be enhanced greatly by future treatments 6-24 months after the first.

Is it safe?
The Thermage® procedure is very safe. It has been studied carefully in thousands of patients with minimal reports of lasting adverse events. The Thermage® procedure is technique sensitive, as the results vary from physician to physician performing this procedure. Dr. Roper feels that this procedure requires a board certified skin specialist knowledgeable in skin problems. Dr. Roper, board certified by the prestigious American Board of Dermatology, is an Emory University trained dermatologist, highly trained in skin disease, skin surgery, and management of skin problems, and should be your best choice to perform this procedure.

How long does it take?
The Thermage® procedure normally takes 60-90 minutes, depending on the size of the area you are having treated. Additional time may be required for skin preparation prior to the procedure, as we allow one hour for anesthetic cream prior to the procedure.

When will I see results?
In most patients, results appear gradually over a period of 6 months, although some patients see an earlier response.

How long will the effects of the Thermage® procedure last?
Recently published studies show that improvements peak at 6 months, and last for 4-5 years, with 20-30% diminishing of improvement over time. This procedure can be repeated at 6-12 month intervals or longer for enhanced results.

How many treatments will I need?
A single treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients, however, if you are in your 50's or over, more that one treatment is usually recommended. Dr. Roper will assess your skin condition and skin type, and will recommend the number of Thermage® treatments necessary to achieve optimal results for your skin.

How long before I can return to my normal activities?
Most people return to their regular activities the day immediately following the Thermage® procedure. There is some swelling for a few days, which is minimized with medication.

How does it work?
The top layer of your skin is protected with a cooling spray while radiofrequency energy heats the collagen in the lower layers of the skin. This heating action causes the deeper structures of the skin to tighten , resulting in a "shrinkwrap" type of effect. Further research also shows that fatty pockets in the skin, like the "waddle" under the chin, can be significantly reduced with this device.

What does the Thermage® procedure feel like?
Prior to the Thermage® treatment, an anesthetic cream is applied to enhance comfort. With each touch of the Thermage® treatment tip, there is a brief intense heat sensation as the collagen in the deep layers of the skin is treated. To protect the surface of the skin, a cooling spray is delivered before, during, and after each application of the treatment tip.
